Do you need a fishing permit?
In Sweden everyone has the right to fish along the sea coast and in the five great lakes — Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren and Storsjön (Jämtland) — without a permit. This is called free rod fishing and it is set out in §12 of the Swedish fisheries act.
In all other inland waters the fishing rights are privately owned or managed by a fishing conservation association (FVOF). There you need a permit — a fiskekort. The same is true in running water without an association, where it is the landowner who decides.
What does a fishing permit cost?
The price varies enormously with the water and the period.
- Day permit on smaller association water: SEK 50–150.
- Week permit: SEK 200–500.
- Annual permit: SEK 300–1,500.
- Premium water (the classic salmon rivers, the famous trout waters): a day permit can cost SEK 500–2,000.
Many associations offer a youth discount and a family permit. Check before you buy.
Where do I buy one?
Two online portals dominate:
- iFiske.se — covers the majority of Swedish associations. Buy through the web or the app, and the permit appears at once.
- NatureIT — smaller, but it holds certain specific waters.
(The former portal Fiskekort.se closed in 2022 — those waters now sell through other channels.)
Many associations also have their own site and sell permits locally — at petrol stations, tackle shops and tourist information offices.
On every water page and association page on Fångstrapport.se we link straight to the point of sale wherever we know it.
The permit — and knowing when the fish are feeding
The permit is the first thing you need before you go. The second is a sense of when the trip is actually worth making, and the permit says nothing at all about that.
That is what Huggtabell.se works out — the bite table for your water: a seven-day forecast in which weather, air pressure, moon and earlier catches are weighed together hour by hour, with the best windows of the week marked. If you are new to this, it saves a great deal of guessing.
If you would rather try it first, a week costs SEK 20 with no account — one payment, no renewal — at Huggtabell.se →
What is included — and what is not?
The permit gives you the right to fish according to the association's rules, in their water, for the period it covers. It does not automatically give you the right to:
- Use a boat (a separate boat permit or the landowner's consent may be required).
- Use fixed gear (nets, traps) — that needs its own licence.
- Ignore local rules on minimum size, closed seasons or daily quotas. Whichever is stricter, the national or the county rule, is the one that applies.
Always carry the permit with you, on your phone or printed. Bailiffs have the right to ask for both your permit and your identification.
