Fishing from the shore

The simplest way into angling. No boat costs, no advanced techniques — just you, a rod and a shoreline. Where, when and how.

Where you can fish for free

Sweden has some of the most generous public fishing rights in Europe. With a rod or an ice rod — what the law calls handredskap, hand-held gear — you can fish free of charge across two very large areas:

  • The entire coast, from the Norwegian border in Bohuslän to the Finnish border in Norrbotten. You need no permit as long as you fish with a rod, an ice rod or a float.
  • The five great lakes: Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren and Storsjön in Jämtland.

All other lakes and rivers need a fishing permit from the local fishing conservation association (FVOF). Look the water up on Fångstrapport — lakes, rivers, sea — and we will link on to the association and to the point of sale wherever we know it (iFiske, Fiskekort.se, NatureIT or the association's own site). Always check what applies at the place you intend to fish: the county administrative board may have local rules that override the association's.

Nature reserves and Natura 2000 areas can carry their own restrictions even where the fishing is otherwise free. Read the signs.

What makes a good spot from the shore?

Shore fishing is about reading water you cannot see into. Fish gather where there is food, shelter or a difference in temperature. Some kinds of place are almost always better than an open stretch of beach:

  • Breakwaters and jetties give you deep water straight off the edge. Classic sea trout, perch and cod spots along the coast.
  • Points and headlands — fish travel around the point rather than in over the shallows.
  • River mouths, where a stream or a river runs out. Fresh water meets salt, oxygenated water draws in prey fish, and the predators follow.
  • Reed edges and stone piers in lakes hold pike and big perch, especially at dawn and dusk.
  • Bridges and locks concentrate both current and fish.

This holds whether you are standing on the rocks of Bohuslän, on a pier in Mälaren or beside a reed bed in an inland lake in Norrland.

Enough tackle to start

You can start shore fishing for under SEK 1,000. The minimum:

  • A spinning rod of 8–9 ft, rated 10–40 g. It handles both coastal lures for sea trout and perch in a lake. Buy mid-priced — cheap rods go soft and imprecise.
  • A fixed-spool reel in size 2500–3000 with 0.25 mm monofilament or 0.15 mm braid.
  • Spoons in three sizes (10 g, 18 g, 22 g) — Toby, Pixee or the equivalent are good value and proven.
  • Crankbaits in two sizes, to cover shallow and deeper water.
  • A fluorocarbon leader (0.30 mm), 50 cm long — it makes the lure less visible. For pike: a wire trace is compulsory if you do not want to lose the fish.

Once you know it is for you, you can specialise — surfcasting for flatfish, fly for sea trout, a jig rig for zander. But start broad.

The shore-fishing seasons

The best moments from the shore follow the fish as they move into shallow water:

Spring (March–May): sea trout and garfish seek the warmth close in — often the best coastal fishing of the whole year. In lakes, pike wake up in shallow bays after spawning.

Summer (June–August): mackerel along the west coast from the end of June. Perch, zander and pike in lakes — fish early or late, since the middle of the day is bright and warm.

Autumn (September–November): pike feed before winter and sit within reach of the reed edges. Sea trout return to the coast. Whitefish and Baltic herring in the Baltic.

Winter (December–February): ice fishing on safe ice — see ice fishing and water safety. Open coastal fishing continues in Bohuslän and parts of Skåne through mild winters.

Safety on the shore

What kills shore anglers is not usually an accident with a fish — it is the water and the weather. Think through:

  • Rocks and stone piers are slippery. Algae and salt water make them lethal. Wear shoes with real grip. Never run.
  • Waves off the open sea. The worst accidents happen when someone loses their footing to an unexpected wave. Do not stand with your back to the sea.
  • Thunder over open water — go in. A carbon rod is an excellent lightning conductor.
  • Cold water kills quickly. Even in summer the water is only 14–18 degrees in central and northern Sweden. A buoyancy aid when you fish from a pier or a jetty in cold water is cheap life insurance.
